Over 30 Students Suspended from Sawla SHS indefinitely for indiscipline

Over thirty students from Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have been suspended indefinitely for violating the Ghana Education Service (GES) rules regarding the use of mobile phones on school premises. A significant number of those affected are girls, accused of bringing mobile phones to school, in direct contravention of the regulations set by the GES.
Sources within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Directorate of GES suggest that the suspended students have also been involved in other immoral activities while at school, though the specifics of these allegations have not been fully disclosed.
A seven-member committee formed by the school’s management to investigate the situation found all of the students guilty of the accusations, leading to their indefinite suspension. This decision has sparked an outcry from some parents, many of whom claim they were not officially informed about the suspensions.
One parent expressed their frustration, saying, “If I entrusted my child into your care, why should I be asked to send her packing without receiving official notice about the students involved? What kind of management is this?” This sentiment reflects the growing concern among parents who feel excluded from the decision-making process.

Another parent, Ferida Issahaku, echoed similar displeasure with the school’s handling of the matter. “I only heard about the suspension from a friend. I should have been informed, and perhaps even gone to collect her. As of now, she hasn’t returned, and we don’t know her whereabouts,” said Issahaku. Her words highlight the communication breakdown between the school management and the parents.
Sawla Senior High School has previously made headlines due to incidents involving inappropriate tutor-student relationships. Some staff members accused of misconduct have been dismissed, while others were suspended. Despite efforts to address these issues, the school is once again embroiled in controversy.
The school has also faced scrutiny over its academic performance. In the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Sawla Senior High School recorded the lowest performance in the country, alongside the Savannah Region, which was ranked last in Ghana. This has contributed to concerns about the overall management of the institution.
As the suspension issue continues to unfold, parents are demanding more transparency and communication from the school authorities, emphasizing the importance of involving them in decisions that affect their children’s education and well-being.
