OKESS Students Storm KASS Amid Renewed Violence at Ashanti SHS Boys’ Sports Festival

Students of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) in Kumasi reportedly stormed the premises of Anglican Senior High School (KASS) in a renewed outbreak of violent clashes during the ongoing Ashanti Region Senior High Schools and Colleges Boys’ Sports Festival.

The incident, which occurred amid heightened excitement surrounding the inter-school sporting competition, is said to have caused panic among students, staff, and nearby residents as tensions between the two institutions escalated.

Eyewitnesses indicate that groups of OKESS students entered the KASS campus in large numbers, leading to confrontations that disrupted sporting activities and normal academic routines. Though the full extent of injuries or property damage is yet to be officially confirmed, videos circulating on social media show scenes of chaos, with students running for safety.

The Ashanti Regional SHS Boys’ Sports Festival, designed to promote unity, discipline, and healthy competition among schools, has in recent years been marred by sporadic incidents of student unrest, raising concerns among education stakeholders and parents.

Security personnel were reportedly deployed to restore calm, while school authorities from both institutions moved to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Education authorities are expected to launch investigations into the latest disturbance, with possible sanctions against individuals found to have instigated or participated in the violence. Calls have also intensified for stricter security arrangements and clearer behavioural guidelines during inter-school sporting events.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and festival organisers have consistently warned students against acts of hooliganism, emphasising that sports festivals should serve as platforms for fostering friendship, sportsmanship, and mutual respect among schools.

As calm gradually returns, many parents and observers are urging authorities to take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence, stressing the need to prioritise student safety and preserve the true spirit of school sports competitions.
