NTC Issues Final Warning: 2025 GTLE Resit is the Last Chance or Restart Teacher Training in 2026

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has issued a crucial notice to all unlicensed graduate teachers: those who fail the final resit of the 2025 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) will be required to restart their teacher training entirely from 2026 onwards.

This bold directive comes as part of the NTC’s transition from a post-graduation to a pre-graduation licensure regime, beginning in 2026. According to the NTC, the October 2025 resit marks the final opportunity for all unlicensed graduates to obtain their professional teaching license through the current system.

“Any candidate who will not be successful in the 2025 examination will have to start afresh by joining their colleagues in the teacher education institutions for their professional examination in 2026 and beyond,” the NTC confirmed.

Key Details of the 2025 GTLE

  • Registration Deadline: July 7, 2025
  • Examination Dates: July 18 to 20, 2025
  • Eligibility:
    • Holders of a Bachelor of Education degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
    • Foreign-trained teachers must secure an evaluation certificate from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)
    • Candidates must have completed national service or be currently serving

Mandatory Indexing Before Registration

All new candidates must be indexed before registering. Prospective candidates are to verify their indexing status by visiting https://indexing.ntc.gov.gh. Once confirmed, they can proceed to register for the GTLE at https://exams.ntc.gov.gh after making the required payment at any Prudential Bank branch or via mobile money using the shortcode *772*51#.

Examination Structure

Candidates will write three main papers:

  1. General Professional Knowledge – numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills
  2. Grade-Level Specialism Pedagogy – based on the level of training (Early Grade, Primary, JHS, SHS, or TVET)
  3. Multiple or Single Subject Specialism – based on the candidate’s area of specialization

Transition to Pre-Graduation Licensing from 2026

Beginning in 2026, the teacher licensing examination will only be conducted before graduation at teacher education institutions. This means that all future GTLE candidates must be enrolled students at approved teacher training institutions.

As such, any graduate who fails the October 2025 final resit will be compelled to re-enroll in a teacher education programme to be eligible for future licensing.

The NTC has reiterated that no extension will be granted for the 2025 GTLE registration, and urged all eligible candidates—especially those who have resits—to take this final opportunity seriously.

Conclusion

The countdown to the end of post-graduate teacher licensing has begun. The NTC’s announcement is both a final opportunity and a stern warning to all prospective teachers who are yet to pass the GTLE. For these individuals, July and October 2025 are not just examination dates—they represent a critical career crossroad.
