Nkyenekyene: MP donates GH¢10k to Education Directorate to temporarily accommodate displaced teachers
A devastating fire that broke out at the Nkyenekyene Presbyterian Basic School in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region has prompted swift action from the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso Constituency, Davis Ansah Opoku.
The fire, which occurred on 9 January 2025, destroyed a teachers’ bungalow, leaving resident teachers displaced and causing significant property loss. Local reports suggest that the blaze was allegedly started by a mentally challenged individual.
In response to the tragedy, MP Opoku quickly visited the affected site to assess the damage and ensure that the needs of the displaced teachers were addressed. Understanding the urgency of the situation, he donated GH¢ 10,000 to the Eastern Region Education Directorate to provide temporary accommodation for the teachers who were rendered homeless by the fire.
In addition to this donation, Opoku reached out directly to the two female teachers who lost their personal belongings in the fire. He offered them an undisclosed sum of money to help them recover and provided bags of rice to offer some relief during this difficult time.
“Teachers are crucial to the development of our communities and the education of our children. When they face such unexpected hardships, it is important that we come together to support them,” Opoku said, reflecting on his decision to act swiftly.

Further demonstrating his commitment to improving local infrastructure and emergency preparedness, the MP also allocated GH¢10,000 to the Ghana Fire Service. This donation will assist in enhancing future emergency responses, including the procurement of additional fuel for fire trucks, which is critical for swift and effective intervention in emergencies like this.
The suspect in the fire incident has been apprehended and is currently under investigation by local authorities, who are working to determine the full details of the event. Meanwhile, the community has expressed its gratitude for the prompt and compassionate response from their MP. Local residents are also collaborating with authorities to provide ongoing support to the affected teachers and to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The support shown by MP Davis Ansah Opoku in this trying time has been nothing short of remarkable,” said one community member. “His quick action has made a significant difference, and we are grateful for his leadership and generosity.”
As investigations continue and recovery efforts are underway, the intervention of MP Opoku highlights the importance of responsive leadership in times of crisis and the strong sense of community that exists in Mpraeso and beyond.
