Nkwanta SHS Headmaster Apologizes to GES Over Unauthorized Media Interview

The headmaster of Nkwanta Senior High School, Solomon Sarpong Bagmae, has publicly apologized to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education for granting a media interview without prior approval.

Mr. Bagmae’s suspension followed an interview he granted to Adom Media Channel, in which he appealed for food support for candidates preparing for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The August 4, 2025, report — later circulated by other media outlets under the headline “Nkwanta Schools Appeal for Food Support for WASSCE Candidates Amid Conflict” — was said to have misrepresented aspects of the situation.

In clarifying his comments, the headmaster stated that contrary to reports of increased candidate numbers, none of the three schools involved had registered additional students for the exams. He explained that only those already registered with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) were counted.

Mr. Bagmae also noted that food supplies had been available before the crisis in Nkwanta and that authorities had continued providing provisions after students were recalled to school to continue their studies.

Reflecting on the interview, he admitted that his desire to advocate for students — who have faced disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the area — led him to overstate the school’s needs.

“In doing so, I inadvertently echoed the sentiments of Charles Dickens’ character Oliver Twist by asking for more,” he remarked.

He emphasized that it was never his intention to disrespect or undermine the Government, the GES, or any other authority. His apology extended to the Minister of Education, the Director-General of GES, the Oti Regional Minister, the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education, the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Director of Education, the school’s Board of Governors, and all stakeholders who have worked to ensure the smooth conduct of the WASSCE in the area.

Mr. Bagmae assured the public that candidates are now comfortably taking their examinations in a conducive environment.
