Kumasi Mayor Rewards Former Teacher With $1,000 for Discipline That Transformed His Life

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori, has honoured his former basic school teacher with a cash reward of $1,000, expressing deep gratitude for a moment of discipline that he believes changed the course of his life.

According to the Mayor, he vividly remembers being caned in Class 4, an experience many children would dread. However, he credits that single act of correction for turning his academic life around. Before the incident, he consistently placed 27th in class, but the discipline he received that day gave him the push he needed to take his studies seriously.

Hon. Ofori revealed that after the incident, his performance improved dramatically, moving from 27th position to 2nd in class. This academic breakthrough laid the foundation for his future success, enabling him to pursue higher education and eventually rise to become the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

He described the reward as a token of appreciation to a teacher whose strictness and commitment contributed significantly to shaping his future. The gesture, he added, highlights the important role teachers play in guiding young learners, sometimes through actions that only make sense years later.

The Mayor encouraged young people to embrace discipline and hard work, noting that success often begins with small but meaningful corrections. He also urged teachers to continue upholding high standards while using appropriate methods to instill values in their students.

The touching gesture has sparked discussion about the lasting impact of teachers and the different forms discipline can take in Ghanaian classrooms. Many have praised the Mayor for acknowledging the role of educators in shaping future leaders.
