GTEC Warns Public as Six University of Ghana Learning Centres Found Operating Without Accreditation

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a strong public caution after discovering that six University of Ghana Learning Centres are operating without the necessary accreditation. The Commission has announced that all certificates issued by these unaccredited centres will be invalid for employment, further studies, or professional development.

The alert was contained in a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, and signed by Dr. Emmanuel Oware Nyarko, Director of Quality Assurance and Compliance at GTEC.

Parents and Students Advised to Verify Accreditation

GTEC urged parents, students, guardians, and employers to verify the accreditation status of any tertiary institution or satellite centre before enrolling or hiring graduates.

“The public must exercise due diligence to avoid financial loss and invalid qualifications,” the statement cautioned.

11 Institutions Barred From Admitting New Students

As part of ongoing regulatory enforcement, 11 tertiary institutions have been ordered to suspend fresh admissions until they meet all regulatory and quality assurance requirements.

The affected institutions include:

  • Institute of Business Management and Journalism, Kumasi
  • Rural Development College, Kwaso
  • University College of Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Bunso
  • Kings and Queens Medical College, Akosombo
  • Springs College, Labone

26 Institutions Operating With Expired Accreditation

The Commission further identified 26 institutions operating with expired accreditation, warning that continuing to run programmes under such conditions violates national quality standards.

Institutions cited include:

  • Abbeam Institute of Technology, Kasoa
  • Lakeside University College, Accra
  • ILMA Institute of Science and Technology
  • Presbyterian Nurses’ Training College, Bawku
  • Holy Spirit College of Education, Ho

GTEC emphasized that qualifications obtained from institutions without valid accreditation risk becoming unrecognised and useless to graduates, potentially affecting career progression and access to further education.

Protecting Standards and Preventing Exploitation

According to GTEC, the enforcement exercise is part of broader national efforts to uphold academic quality, protect students from exploitation, and strengthen public confidence in Ghana’s tertiary education system.

The Commission reassured the public that it will continue monitoring institutions nationwide and will not hesitate to sanction any organisation operating outside the regulatory framework.
