GNAT responds to bribery accusations

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has firmly refuted allegations of accepting a GH¢1 million bribe from the campaign team of former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

These claims, which have surfaced on social media, suggest that the bribe was meant to influence GNAT’s leadership to spearhead a nationwide demonstration on issues related to galamsey (illegal mining), aimed at bolstering the NDC’s electoral campaign ahead of the December 7 elections.

In a press release dated September 30, 2024, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas T. Musah, categorically debunked these claims, asserting that neither the association nor its leadership has ever met with or received any funds from the NDC campaign team.

The release emphasized that GNAT has not been involved in any discussions regarding a demonstration on galamsey, nor has it ever been approached for such actions.

GNAT described the allegations as “wicked, sinister, mischievous, vexatious, diabolical, and malevolent,” urging the public to treat them with the contempt they deserve.

The association expressed concern over the malicious intent of the writer who circulated these false claims, suggesting that it is part of an effort to tarnish the reputation of GNAT and link its leadership to political campaigns.

The association further highlighted the severity of galamsey, a practice that is causing significant environmental damage and depleting natural resources across the country.

While addressing the falsehoods, GNAT reiterated its commitment to advocating for the welfare of teachers and ensuring the well-being of the country’s education sector.

The press release also called out the individual behind the circulating allegations, identified by the phone number MTN 233240775555, urging the person to bow their head in shame for spreading such falsehoods.

GNAT has referred the matter to its legal team for advice and necessary action under the Communication Act, 2008 (Act 775).

GNAT concluded its statement by reaffirming its role as a non-partisan, responsible organization that remains focused on its core mission of advocating for education and teachers’ welfare.

It vowed to continue its efforts in addressing the needs of its members and the broader educational community without engaging in political machinations.
