GNAT National Delegates Conference 2026 Adopts Key Resolutions to Improve Teacher Welfare

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has adopted a number of far-reaching resolutions aimed at improving the welfare, financial security, and professional development of its members at the 2026 National Delegates Conference.

The resolutions, which were unanimously endorsed by delegates from across the country, focus on strengthening existing welfare schemes, reducing the cost of accessing loans, and expanding opportunities for continuous professional development.

One of the major decisions taken at the conference was the upward review of the Teachers’ Fund contribution. The minimum contribution has been increased from GH¢120 to GH¢150, a move GNAT says is necessary to enhance the sustainability of the fund and enable it to better meet the growing needs of members.

In addition, the interest rate on Teachers’ Fund loans has been reduced from 16 per cent to 14 per cent. This reduction is expected to ease the financial burden on teachers who rely on the fund for personal and professional support.

Delegates also approved an increase in contributions to the GNAT Cancer Fund. The contribution has been doubled from GH¢5 to GH¢10, a decision aimed at strengthening support for members battling cancer and other related health challenges.

On matters relating to pensions, members were informed that Glico is no longer handling Tier Two pensions. Teachers were therefore advised to check their contributions to the GESOPS Fund by dialing the short code *733# to stay updated on their pension records.

The conference further encouraged members to take advantage of academic opportunities offered by the GNAT Institute for Research, Innovation and Reform in Education and Services (IRIRS). Members were admonished to enrol in courses run by the institute, including its graduate programmes, with the added incentive of a 20 per cent reduction on admission fees for GNAT members.

Another significant outcome of the conference was the expansion of Teachers’ Fund loan categories. This development is expected to make loan products more flexible and responsive to the diverse needs of teachers nationwide.

GNAT leadership described the adopted resolutions as a strong demonstration of the union’s commitment to improving the welfare, professional growth, and financial wellbeing of teachers. Members have been urged to familiarize themselves with the new changes and take full advantage of the benefits arising from the 2026 National Delegates Conference.
