GNAT Mourns Victims of Tragic Air Crash That Claimed Eight Lives

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the people of Ghana following the devastating air crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The tragic incident claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, plunging the nation into mourning.

In a heartfelt press statement signed by the General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, GNAT extended its deepest condolences to the government, bereaved families, and all Ghanaians. The association described the crash as one that “brought Ghana to its knees” and left the entire country “shocked and overwhelmed.”

Among the victims were prominent political and military figures, including:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
  • Alhaji Muhammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Central Regional Minister
  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate of the NDC

GNAT praised their exemplary service to the nation and acknowledged their ultimate sacrifice, calling it a loss that has brought pain and distress to their families and to the country at large.

The association also honored the fallen military personnel:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all from the Ghana Armed Forces

GNAT described their sacrifice as gallant, noting that they responded to the national call with courage and dedication, only for death to “lay its icy hands” on them in the line of duty.

“The mighty have fallen,” the statement read, “they bore up duty with finesse and sacrifice and bow out of duty honourably and solemnly.” GNAT emphasized that their memories and service would remain etched in the nation’s history for generations to come.

The statement concluded with a call for national unity and renewed patriotism, urging all Ghanaians to honour the sacrifices of the fallen by remaining committed to the values they represented—duty, patriotism, and service.

“Fare-thee-well, comrades! May the earth lie softly on you,” GNAT mournfully declared, joining the rest of the nation in paying tribute to the departed souls.
