Ghanaian Teacher Urges Parents to Guide SHS Students on Dangers of Life Away from Home

A Ghanaian teacher and counselor has called on parents to take a more proactive role in guiding their newly enrolled senior high school (SHS) wards as they begin life away from home for the first time.

According to the counselor, the transition from basic school to senior high school often exposes young students to various social pressures and risky behaviours. He therefore urged parents to openly discuss with their children the potential dangers of certain habits and relationships they may encounter in the school environment.

The counselor emphasized that issues such as drug use, homosexuality, and sexual relations have become growing concerns in some schools, particularly among students who lack proper parental guidance and moral grounding.

He advised parents to engage in honest conversations with their wards before and during their stay in school, highlighting the importance of self-discipline, focus, and respect for school rules.

“Parents should not assume that teachers will handle everything. A child who is guided at home stands a better chance of making good decisions in school,” he said.

The teacher-counselor also appealed to school authorities to strengthen counseling departments and organize regular sensitization sessions to help students navigate peer pressure and personal challenges in a healthy manner.

His message comes at a crucial time as thousands of first-year SHS students across Ghana settle into their new academic and social environments under the Free SHS policy.

He concluded by reminding parents that their involvement does not end after school placement. “Your child may be away, but your presence through regular communication, advice, and moral support is what keeps them safe,” he stressed.
