GES Reinforces Professional Dress Code for Teachers Nationwide

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm reminder to all teachers across the country to strictly comply with the professional dressing standards outlined in the GES Code of Conduct. The directive seeks to reinforce the Service’s long-standing commitment to promoting decency, discipline, and integrity among educators, who serve as role models for learners both inside and outside the classroom.

According to the GES, teachers are expected to demonstrate a high level of decency not only in speech and behaviour but also in their appearance and grooming. While the Service does not prescribe a uniform for teachers, it insists that every educator’s dressing must reflect the dignity and moral standards associated with the teaching profession. The goal, GES noted, is to ensure that teachers project an image that commands respect, professionalism, and authority in the school environment.

Under the new enforcement guidelines, female teachers are advised to refrain from wearing tight-fitting clothes, miniskirts, sleeveless dresses, excessive makeup, brightly coloured or multi-coloured outfits, and dyed hair.

Male teachers are cautioned against wearing jeans, round-neck T-shirts, or using earphones during school hours. The Service explained that such styles do not represent the decorum and professionalism expected from educators entrusted with shaping young minds.

Education officers have expressed growing concern about the rising cases of indecent dressing among some teachers, especially at the junior high school level. They noted that inappropriate clothing choices can distract learners and even influence them to imitate similar styles, undermining classroom discipline and focus. “Teachers are mentors and authority figures; their appearance should reinforce the values of respect and discipline they seek to instil in students,” one officer remarked.

In response, the GES has directed all heads of schools to ensure strict adherence to the dress code and to take proactive steps to maintain decorum among staff. Heads are encouraged to regularly remind teachers of their responsibilities as public servants and role models.

The Service reaffirmed that a teacher’s comportment and overall presentation have a direct impact on students’ moral, behavioural, and academic development. This renewed call for professionalism in appearance, it said, forms part of a broader strategy to uphold ethical standards and restore public confidence in the teaching profession.

GES concluded by urging teachers to take pride in their work and embody the values of discipline, responsibility, and decency—hallmarks of a profession that continues to shape the character and future of the nation.
