GES Directs Schools to Commemorate 2025 Menstrual Hygiene Day

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive to all Regional Directors to lead efforts in commemorating the 2025 Menstrual Hygiene (MH) Day across schools under their jurisdiction. This year’s celebration, which falls on May 28, 2025, is under the theme “Together for a Period-Friendly Ghana”.
In a memo signed by Dr. Munawaru Issahaque, the Acting Deputy Director-General for Quality and Access, GES emphasized the importance of the day in advocating for menstrual health and hygiene, promoting open discussions, and reducing the stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on May 28, a date chosen to highlight the average menstrual cycle (28 days) and the average duration of menstruation (5 days). It was initiated in 2014 by the German NGO WASH United and is now marked globally.
According to the GES memo, this year’s objectives include:
- Educating stakeholders to dispel myths and encourage open conversations about menstruation.
- Advocating for affordable and accessible menstrual hygiene products for girls and women.
- Pushing for the provision of gender-friendly toilet facilities with changing rooms in schools and communities.

GES encouraged schools to engage students through various activities such as:
- Art and quiz competitions,
- Drama performances,
- Awareness creation via community radio and other media platforms,
- Girls sharing their personal menstrual experiences and how support has improved their school attendance,
- Creation of menstrual bracelets as symbols of advocacy and empowerment.
The directive also calls on District Directors to ensure effective commemoration of the event at the school level to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for menstruating girls.
Menstrual Hygiene Day serves as a reminder that menstrual health is not just a personal issue but a public health and human rights matter. GES’s involvement highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to empowering adolescent girls and promoting gender equity in education.
