GES Bans Three Eastern Region SHS Schools from Sports and Co-Curricular Activities for Two Years

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has imposed a two-year ban on three senior high schools in the Eastern Region from participating in sports and other related school activities following incidents of student indiscipline and hooliganism.
The affected schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH), New Juaben Senior High School (NJUASCO), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (NSUTECH).
According to a directive issued by the Eastern Regional Education Directorate on February 11, 2026, the decision was taken after reports of disturbances before, during, and after the Regional Super Zonal Sports (Games) Competition.
The Directorate, in collaboration with the Regional 2nd Cycle Schools’ Sports Executives, expressed strong displeasure over the conduct of students from the affected schools. The directive referenced the GES Code of Conduct, particularly Section 2.17 which addresses physical and psychological violence, as well as the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association (ER SCSA) Code of Discipline under Article VII (Disturbances, Riots, Hooliganism) and Article VIII (Sanctions and Punishments).
As part of the sanctions, the three schools are prohibited from organizing, participating in, or spectating at all sporting and co-curricular activities. These include quizzes, debates, cadet activities, entertainment programmes, and other related events at the school, zonal, and regional levels.

The ban takes effect from February 11, 2026, and will remain in force for two years.
Additionally, each of the affected schools has been fined GH¢500. The schools may also be required to pay for any damages or injuries caused during the incidents. The exact cost will be determined by a committee based on the extent of damage or injury recorded.
GES has further directed school authorities to ensure that students, staff, old students, and supporters strictly comply with all rules and regulations governing both GES and ERSCSA to prevent further disciplinary action.
The directive was signed by the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Asantewaa Owusu (PhD), who called for full cooperation from the affected institutions.
Copies of the directive have been forwarded to the Director-General of GES, the Director of Physical Education and Sports Programmes at GES Headquarters, and all relevant District and Municipal Directors in the Eastern Region.
The move is seen as part of GES’ broader effort to enforce discipline and promote safe participation in school sporting and co-curricular activities across the country.
