GES Approves Nationwide Inspection of 1,000 GALOP Basic Schools Starting June 23

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially authorized the National School Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) to embark on a nationwide inspection of 1,000 selected Basic Schools under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP). This large-scale monitoring exercise is scheduled to take place from 23rd June to 18th July 2025 across all 16 regions of the country.
The directive, issued by Dr. Munawaru Issahaque, the Acting Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access, aims to ensure the continued effectiveness of the GALOP initiative, which has been vital in improving learning outcomes and strengthening school accountability at the basic level.
According to the official letter from GES Headquarters, the inspections will focus on five key areas:
- Inspection Ratings – Identifying schools that meet the national inspection standards, particularly those rated as “good” or “outstanding.”
- Teacher Attendance – Evaluating national teacher attendance rates to measure commitment and presence.
- Pupil Attendance – Assessing regular student participation in academic activities.
- Teacher-to-Pupil Ratio – Monitoring classroom sizes and teacher workloads.
- Infrastructure Quality – Inspecting the state of school facilities to determine adequacy for effective teaching and learning.

Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to inform Directors of the beneficiary schools under GALOP to fully cooperate and take all necessary preparatory steps for the exercise.
The inspection is a key part of the accountability framework under GALOP, a Government of Ghana initiative supported by development partners such as the World Bank, which targets improving learning outcomes in low-performing basic schools across the country.
The move demonstrates the GES’s commitment to evidence-based policy implementation and quality assurance in basic education delivery.
Background: GALOP, launched in 2019, seeks to improve the quality of education in over 10,000 low-performing basic schools nationwide through targeted interventions such as teacher training, school leadership support, and resource provision. Regular monitoring and evaluation are central to tracking progress and impact.
GES has reiterated its resolve to ensure transparency and improved outcomes in all beneficiary schools, and this upcoming nationwide inspection exercise is a critical step in that direction.
