Final-Year JOTECH Student Stabbed to Death by Friend

A devastating tragedy has struck the St. Joseph Technical Institute (JOTECH) at Kwahu Tafo in the Eastern Region, following the death of an 18-year-old final-year student, Alex Awuah. The young student was reportedly stabbed in the neck by his friend and colleague, Samuel Opuni, popularly known as “Sugar,” during an altercation on the evening of Wednesday, July 17, 2025.
The incident, which occurred around 6:40 p.m., has plunged the school and local community into shock and mourning. According to reports, the suspect had earlier been deboardinized by school authorities and was temporarily staying with Awuah at his home.
Eyewitness and niece of the deceased, Daniela Asumani, narrated that the confrontation began when Awuah was requesting money from a friend. During the interaction, Sugar allegedly attempted to drag the friend away, leading to a heated exchange. It was during this altercation that Sugar is said to have twisted Awuah’s arms behind his back and stabbed him in the neck.

A neighbour who witnessed the aftermath rushed Awuah to a nearby clinic in Kwahu Tafo. However, they were referred to the Atibie Government Hospital for further treatment. Shockingly, the hospital allegedly demanded a police medical form before initiating treatment—a delay that may have contributed to Awuah’s untimely death.
The suspect, Samuel Opuni, has since been arrested and is currently in custody at the Kwahu Mpraeso Police Station as investigations continue into the tragic incident.
The incident has sparked conversations about student safety, emergency medical care, and the handling of disciplinary issues in schools. Grief-stricken family members, friends, and members of the school community have called for justice for Awuah, describing him as a respectful and promising young man.
Authorities are urging the public to remain calm as they work to uncover the full details of the case. Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured that justice will be served as investigations proceed.
