Education Ministry to Reclassify Senior High Schools to Ensure Fairness in CSSPS Placement

The Education Ministry has announced plans to undertake a major reform of the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) to promote fairness and reduce congestion in the country’s top senior high schools.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu revealed that the government will soon reclassify some senior high schools across the country. According to him, ten Category A schools will be downgraded to Category B, while ten Category B schools will be upgraded to Category A.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that the reclassification will be supported by significant infrastructure upgrades to ensure that the newly elevated schools meet Category A standards. He noted that the move is necessary to address the growing imbalance in school placements, which has created fierce competition for limited spaces in a handful of elite schools.

“With about 393,000 students competing for just 76,000 spaces in our top schools, maintaining fairness and transparency in the placement process has become a challenge,” the Minister stated.

The new policy aims to distribute opportunities more evenly across all regions. The government, he said, will expand key facilities such as dormitories, classroom blocks, and science laboratories in selected schools to make them more appealing to students and parents.

Mr. Iddrisu also revealed that regions such as North East, Savannah, Oti, and Western North currently have no Category A schools. As part of the reclassification exercise, the Ministry will prioritize infrastructure development in these regions to bridge the gap in access to quality secondary education.

“This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to make the CSSPS more transparent, balanced, and efficient for every student,” he added.

The Ministry of Education is expected to release the full list of affected schools and the implementation schedule once ongoing consultations with key stakeholders are concluded.
