Education Minister Charges School Heads to Enforce Discipline, Vows Support for Affected Students

The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed all heads of schools across Ghana to strictly enforce the disciplinary guidelines set by the Ghana Education Service (GES), even if it requires dismissing students who flagrantly breach the rules.

Addressing stakeholders at the Jubilee House during a mid-year review of government interventions and performance in the education sector, Mr. Iddrisu expressed deep concern about the rising indiscipline in some second-cycle institutions. His comments follow a recent incident involving the shooting of a student at SDA Senior High School in Kumasi.

“The government will not compromise on academic excellence and the moral training of our students,” the Minister declared. He stressed that the current administration, under President John Dramani Mahama, has empowered the GES to take decisive action—including dismissals—against acts of gross misconduct by students.

Mr. Iddrisu drew a clear contrast between the current administration’s firm stance and what he described as the leniency of previous governments, emphasizing that the nation’s educational agenda must include both access and discipline.

While underscoring the importance of discipline, the Minister also addressed some unfortunate events during the recently concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). He mentioned the tragic case of a candidate who died from sickle cell complications and another who was denied entry into the exam hall after arriving late due to a motor accident.

“These are heartbreaking but avoidable circumstances,” Mr. Iddrisu lamented. “No student should lose their opportunity to progress academically because of such misfortunes.”

He revealed that his Ministry is actively collaborating with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the GES to find fair and compassionate solutions for affected students. Notably, in response to the situation in Sagnarigu, the Minister disclosed that he had personally intervened by engaging WAEC and securing a list of all students who were unable to write their exams.

“We will not abandon these young ones to the streets. Education is their path to a better future, and we intend to protect that,” he assured.

The Education Minister’s firm position signals a renewed commitment by the government to uphold discipline in schools while ensuring that no child is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control.
