Education Director Calls for Immediate Action to Address Hooliganism and Indiscipline in Second-Cycle Schools

The Central Regional Education Director, Emmanuel Essuman, has expressed serious concerns regarding the increasing levels of hooliganism and indiscipline in second-cycle schools across Ghana. Speaking at a recent event, Mr. Essuman emphasized the critical role that parents must play in helping to curb this growing issue by partnering with school authorities to instill discipline in their children.

He stressed that maintaining good behavior is a shared responsibility between the home and the school, which requires collective effort from both parties.

His remarks were made during the handover ceremony of a newly constructed 100-bed-capacity boys’ dormitory at Gyaase Senior High School in the Assin North District. The event also highlighted the importance of supporting schools through partnerships with well-meaning individuals, as demonstrated by the philanthropist and lecturer, Dr. Joseph Akwasi Nkyi, who made the donation.

Dr. Nkyi, an alumnus of the school, contributed 100 metal beds and funded the construction of a 10-seater toilet and washroom facility for the students. This generous donation is expected to significantly improve the living conditions of the students at Gyaase Senior High School. Dr. Nkyi shared that his decision to give back to the school came after learning about the challenges the institution faced.

He fondly recalled his time at Gyaase in 1978 and expressed his desire for the contribution to inspire others to follow in his footsteps.

“I hope my gesture will encourage others to support their alma mater and help improve the learning environment for current students,” said Dr. Nkyi. He also urged the school authorities to establish a culture of maintenance to ensure that the dormitory and its facilities remain in good condition for future generations.

The Headmaster of Gyaase Senior High School, Charles Buadu, conveyed the school’s heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Nkyi for his donation, which arrived at a crucial time for the institution. Mr. Buadu also took the opportunity to appeal for further assistance in addressing the school’s other infrastructural challenges.

The handover of the new dormitory at Gyaase Senior High School, coupled with Mr. Essuman’s comments on discipline, underscores the need for greater collaboration between parents, educators, and the wider community to create conducive learning environments and maintain a culture of respect and responsibility among students.
