CETAG decides to suspend strike following discussions with the Labour Ministry

The leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) is poised to end its nationwide strike, which has been ongoing for two months. This decision follows a meeting with the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations (MLER) and the Fair Wages Commission on August 19, 2024.

After weeks of intense negotiations since the strike began on June 14, an agreement has been reached. The deal, pending ratification by CETAG’s council within the week, is expected to bring an end to the strike that has significantly affected academic activities across all 46 Colleges of Education.

Under the terms of the agreement, the government has committed to paying the July and August salaries of CETAG members by the end of the month.

This move is expected to bring relief to the teachers, who have been demanding better working conditions and remuneration.

Meanwhile, CETAG’s leadership has welcomed the agreement, hailing it as a significant victory.

“We are pleased that the Government has finally listened to our concerns and agreed to meet our demands.

“We believe this agreement marks a new beginning in our relationship with the Government and paves the way for a more collaborative approach to addressing the challenges facing our sector,” a CETAG spokesperson said.

With the strike set to be called off this week, students and staff of Ghana’s colleges of education can look forward to a return to normalcy.

Employment and Labour Minister, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah has commended all parties and the President for the efforts in resolving this.
