Bureau of Ghana Languages Endorses Ahanta Orthography for Schools

The Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) has officially endorsed the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in educational institutions, marking a major milestone in the promotion and formalisation of the Ahanta language within Ghana’s education system.

In a letter dated January 15, 2026, and addressed to the Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, the Bureau explained that the endorsement followed a comprehensive review of a paper submitted on the Ahanta Language Orthography. The review process involved the constitution of a three-member team tasked with assessing the work and achievements of the Ahanta Language Project Committee (ALPC), with particular attention to the implementation and practical use of the developed orthography.

As part of the assessment, the team, working alongside the Basic Schools’ Coordinator of the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and the Coordinator of the pilot Ahanta language teaching project, undertook field visits to selected schools participating in the pilot programme. During these visits, the team interacted with teachers, learners, parents, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, church leaders and elders to verify the usage, acceptance and progress of the orthography in real classroom settings.

According to the Bureau, findings from the assessment confirmed that the Ahanta Language Orthography meets the required linguistic and educational standards. The pilot programme was also found to have yielded positive results, with strong enthusiasm observed among teachers, learners and parents. Additionally, traditional leaders across Ahanta land reportedly expressed keen interest in the expansion of Ahanta language instruction to more schools.

Based on these outcomes, the Bureau of Ghana Languages formally endorsed the use of the Ahanta Language Orthography in schools within Ahanta land, as well as for the development of teaching and learning materials. The Bureau noted that this endorsement represents a crucial step towards making the Ahanta language examinable at both the Basic Education and Senior High School levels.

The BGL further assured stakeholders of its readiness to certify educational materials developed using the approved Ahanta orthography, paving the way for wider adoption and integration of the language into Ghana’s formal education framework.
