Akontombra SHS Embarks on Community Walk to Curb Rising Cases of Teacher–Student Sexual Misconduct

Akontombra Senior High School in the Western North Region has taken a bold step to address an increasingly worrying issue: the rising cases of teachers and some school staff engaging in inappropriate sexual relationships with students, particularly female students.
Yesterday, the school organized a major community awareness walk through the streets of Akontombra, drawing the attention of residents, parents, and stakeholders to the urgent need to protect students and uphold discipline across educational institutions.
The walk brought together school authorities, teachers, students, community leaders, and concerned citizens who carried placards highlighting the dangers and legal consequences of such misconduct.
Speaking during the event, school authorities emphasized that the upsurge in reported cases of teacher–student sexual relationships threatens the safety, academic performance, and emotional well-being of learners. They stressed that teachers have a sacred responsibility to safeguard students—not exploit them.
According to the organizers, the purpose of the walk was not only to raise public awareness but also to foster a collective community response. They noted that protecting students cannot be the duty of the school alone, and that parents, guardians, and opinion leaders must also help discourage inappropriate behavior and encourage students to report any suspicious advances by adults.
Participants also used the platform to educate the public about the legal ramifications of sexual misconduct involving minors, reminding teachers and school staff that such acts are criminal and punishable under Ghanaian law. Community members were urged to speak out when they detect wrongdoing and support victims who may be afraid to report these incidents.
The Akontombra SHS community walk forms part of broader efforts across the country to curb sexual abuse in schools. Educational stakeholders are increasingly advocating for stricter enforcement of professional standards, enhanced guidance and counselling support for students, and a stronger partnership between schools and communities.
The school authorities expressed hope that this awareness campaign will help reinforce positive teacher conduct and create a safer school environment where students especially girls can learn with confidence and dignity.
